What to expect
It can be exciting to take the first steps towards making positive changes in your life… but don’t be surprised if you are also feeling a little anxious. At this point, it’s not uncommon for some clients to subtly start to torment themselves with doubts; perhaps questioning whether they can really afford the expense. It can help to ask yourself what changes you would like to make in your life, and what they would mean to you. Clients constantly say that they could not put a price on the changes they have achieved, and that they have gained far more than they thought was possible.
At the outset, you should know that you will be in a comfortable, completely confidential setting with someone who respects you, will work with you, engage you very deeply in the process and has a great deal of experience in helping people feel at ease to talk about their issues.
I will work hard to ensure that you have the best possible start and make continued progress in your therapy.

Medicare Rebate
All psychologists at Psych Health Australia are registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and have Medicare provider numbers, enabling you to claim a Medicare rebate for your counselling and group sessions.
To claim these rebates, you must have a referral, in the form of a Mental Health Care Plan, from your GP, psychiatrist or paediatrician. Eligible people can receive:
- 10 individual counselling sessions in a calendar year. Your referring doctor will assess your progress after the first six sessions
- 10 group therapy sessions in a calendar year
To get a referral you will need to make an appointment with your GP to complete a Mental Health Care Plan. It is important to tell the doctor’s receptionist that you are requesting a referral to a clinical psychologist as the GP needs approximately 30 minutes to discuss the plan with you and fill in the required paperwork.
You must obtain your GP referral prior to your first appointment in order to receive Medicare rebates. The GP must have his GP provider number, your medicare number, your full name as it is on your medicare card, date of birth and the date of the referral on the referral letter.
When you attend counselling or a group session, you will receive an invoice which you can take to any Medicare branch to claim your rebate.
Classes do not require an additional GP referral if you already have a current referral. If you do not have one, and you wish to claim a rebate, you will need to get a GP referral before attending the first class.
Note that you do not require a referral from a GP unless you intend to claim a Medicare rebate.
